Total Parenteral Nutrition is one of the ways people receive nutrition when they cannot eat. TPN is made up of a concentrated liquid food mixture administered directly into a vein. This mixture contains all the protein, sugars, fat, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed. This is also called hyperalimentation. When the digestive

tract cannot be used, a special catheter is placed in a large vein in the chest or arm.

It can stay in place for as long as needed. Different kinds of catheters may be used, such as triple lumen, double lumen, or single lumen catheters, as well as Ports, Hickman, Broviac, and PICC lines. 

The amount, type, and route of nutrition is tailored to each patient. Our nutrition support team of pharmacists, technicians, and nurses work with the physician, dietician, and patient/caregiver to ensure the best possible nutritional outcome, minimize infections, and allow our patients to live their lives as independently as possible.

When the doctor orders home care therapy, the hospital/care facility discharge planner/case manager, in coordination with the patient/caregiver, works with River City HealthCare to assess the situation and arrange for delivery of equipment, medication, and/or formulas at appropriate intervals.
